Beautiful mudcake

Erik, Marco and Carla made a nice tree hut in the back yard, and baked a beautiful mudcake they want to show off! Such a shame it can't be eaten!

Sports!

Last weekend Opuwo hosted the regional track and field meeting! Kids from all the schools in the area participated, and the kids had great fun. Erik and his friends where of course there to check it out. The engagement and involvement from the kids running (barefoot and in anything from school uniforms to worn out t-shirts), and the kids watching was overwhelming, and they were all dancing when music was played during the breaks! Fun times in Opuwo.

Just a couple of snapshots of our happy boys, and to let you know that I have added a link on the right side of the page (under Links) where you can see more pictures from our adventures in Southern Africa in the Family Sanders Photoalbum!

On the hill

Last week we went for a visit to Unuhange's village, which is on the hill just outside our town Opuwo. Traditionally after the kids have passed 1 year, they go and live with their grandparent(s) in the village. The same goes for Unuhange (he is the first baby I saw in Opuwo after getting here, just a few days old and already exposed to so many dangers in form of illness and bacteria, living in a hut with no water and only wrapped in a blanket). Anyhow, it was a good visit, despite the sad fact that his new home and grandmother often has little or no food, water, or milk to give the many children who are staying there. The kids are slow and with no energy, and very quiet in comparison to Erik and Gabriel who are all over the place. Xenia, a spanish friend working for an organization in Opuwo, had cooked dinner that we brought, and they all enjoyed the treat.

Full house as usual

A picture of the kids in our backyard - never a day without a full house!

It's raining it's pouring, the old man is snoring.....

After 1 year of more or less NO rain, the rainy season finally came to Opuwo and the North of Namibia two weeks ago. The drought have been so bad this year, that cattle and goats in numbers have died, making it difficult for people who already are in a hard situation to make ends meet. The rain have now been so heavy that it has created other issues (for instance that the town have been without electricity for several days, roads and villages being flooded and eventually evakuated), but at least the cattle and goats are grazing on the green grass that is bursting through the red (and normally very, very, very dry) soil on the airstrip and all around Opuwo. Gabriel took the opportunity to enjoy the rain as well, and wore his rainpants for the first time, while getting muddy in the backyard!
